In an address to a massive crowd in Ramanathapuram as part of the padayatra, Annamalai, made a fervent pledge to uplift the economically weak palmyra farmers in the region. Highlighting the significance of palmyra trees in Tamil Nadu’s Ramanathapuram District, which boasts 15% of India’s total palmyra tree count, Annamalai lamented the prevailing poverty among these farmers and presented a promising vision for their betterment.
Addressing the issue head-on, Annamalai unveiled a comprehensive plan to replace TASMAC liquor with palmyra and coconut toddy, while simultaneously distributing palmyra products through ration shops. He emphasised that the aim of this strategic move is to eliminate the exploitation of the youth and the detrimental effects of alcohol addiction, which he attributed to the conspiracy by the DMK government.
Annamalai said, “Opening more TASMAC outlets all over Tamil Nadu and in order to get more revenue, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government is making our people drunkards and alcohol addicts. The Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party is very clear about the fact that we will open toddy shops in the state. We are clear about passing on the products of coconut and palmyra trees. BJP aims to distribute palm sugar instead of white sugar through ration/PDS shops. There are 10 crore palm trees in India of which 5 crore are in Tamil Nadu and Ramanathapuram constitutes 1.5 crore trees i.e., 15% palm trees of the whole of India is in Ramanathapuram. If we close TASMAC outlets and pass on the products of palm and coconut trees to the people, there will be no poor person here. Whoever has a palm tree at their home should be rich.”
The BJP leader advocated for the utilisation of the vast potential of palmyra and coconut trees, expressing his commitment to providing extensive benefits to the people of Tamil Nadu. He asserted that if the BJP is voted to power, brown sugar extracted from palmyra would replace white sugar in ration shops, further supporting the economic prosperity of palmyra farmers.
Annamalai made a compelling case for the economic impact of this plan, noting that Tamil Nadu alone boasts a staggering 5 crore palmyra trees, with Ramanathapuram District alone accounting for 1.5 crore trees, representing 15% of India’s palmyra tree population. According to him, this abundance of resources, if rightfully recognised and marketed, could transform Ramanathapuram into one of the wealthiest districts in India.
In his address, Annamalai drew a sharp contrast between the prevailing situation, where palmyra farmers toil tirelessly, yet remain impoverished and living in meager conditions, and the promising future he envisions under a BJP-led government. He painted a picture of prosperity and improved livelihoods, where palmyra farmers will no longer languish in poverty, and their hard work will be adequately rewarded.
The BJP leader also criticised the current government’s operation of TASMAC, alleging that it is meant to support certain liquor factories, perpetuating the exploitation of palmyra farmers for personal gains.

After more than 25 years in the military, Michael Hayes and his family just wanted to move home to the quiet, country life he had loved as a child growing up in Palmyra, a few miles southwest of Clarksville.
But for Hayes, his wife Stephenie, his two daughters and many of his neighbors off Jarman Hollow Road, Palmyra lost much of its peaceful appeal when the clay sport shooting range Cross Creek Clays opened up earlier this year. Now they're voicing their objections to plans to rezone the property to allow the business to open an event center on the property.
"We have the shooting all day," said Hayes. "And now they want to have events all night."
Hayes said the saga started on a sour note with him and many of his neighbors when, he says, Cross Creek Clays misrepresented the intentions it had for building on the property. Hayes said he was initially told the owners were building a small, private range for personal use.
"It was forced down the throat of the community," said Hayes, who said by the time they got any notification, it was too late.
That, however, is not the story told by the manager of Cross Creek Clays, Bob Harrison.
Harrison and owner Joseph Calabrace met in 2016 at Blackberry Farm in Tennessee's Smoky Mountains, where Harrison was a shooting instructor. The two hit it off, and Calabrace — a military veteran himself who once served at Fort Campbell — decided to bring the sport he loved to the land he owned in Palmyra.
Construction began on Calabrace's 200 acres in September 2016, and the clay sport shooting club opened to the public this May.
"We have tried to be good neighbors," said Harrison. "But I don't think it is my job to knock on (Hayes') door and ask for permission."
Harrison said the range follows strict regulations, and they have sought all the proper approvals to conduct their business.
But Hayes and many of his neighbors have been speaking out and attending public meetings on the matter, all in the hopes that county commissioners — who are set to vote on the rezoning request on Monday — will listen to their pleas.
"Our lives have already been encroached upon," said Hayes. "Our rights as homeowners have been infringed. It's frustrating."

Building Commissioner Rod Streeter said the company has applied for a zone change from AG Agricultural District to AGC Agricultural Commercial District. That would allow Cross Creek Clays to expand from being just a shooting range to also being an event space.
And that, said Harrison, is all they want to do. "Our idea for the event space is to be able to do things without shooting involved. ... We're just trying to do things the right way."
Streeter said the zoning designation that Cross Creek Clays has applied for was newly created in early 2016, in order to allow for this type of rural business development.
He said the underlying reason is simple. "These types of event places out in the country are more popular. People want country-style event places. They want gatherings on properties that are beautiful."
Hayes and many of his neighbors say the constant shooting starts in the early morning and goes until well after dusk. And if an event center is added, they fear that what is now mostly a noise nuisance could turn into something far worse.
"Living with the shooting during the day is one thing. But then having to tolerate the parties at night ... when do we have peace?" asked Hayes.
Fellow neighbor Keren Underwood said Cross Creek Clays has not been a good neighbor, pointing out the constant noise, the increase in traffic and the disruption to local wildlife, as well as their lost property value.
"We saved our whole lives to get to this quiet respite ... and now it's being ruined," Underwood said. "We have no peace here. We have no quiet."
Adding to their frustrations, both Underwood's husband and Hayes' father are veterans with PTSD, which they both say is aggravated by the constant shooting. And Hayes — whose two daughters are home-schooled by his wife — says his girls are also feeling the impact, particularly his 15-year old autistic daughter Catherine.
"I do feel like I'm trapped," said Catherine.
Harrison said they do not allow shooting on the range before 9 a.m. or after 8 p.m. He also said the proposal to add an event center might result in a reduction in the amount of shooting at the range, because they would not allow shooting while an event was underway.
At an informal County Commissioner meeting Tuesday, Harrison told commissioners he would be happy to work with the local residents to address their concerns.
As for the event space, Hayes and some of his neighbors worry about increased traffic, and the possibility that alcohol will be served.
Harrison said that's not going to happen. "There is a huge concern about alcohol and guns being mixed. We would never allow that," said Harrison. He went on to add they have no plans to sell alcohol.
Harrison pointed out they have built a $4 million dollar investment that they want to protect. "We're not going to be having all-night parties," he said.
Not all the neighbors say Cross Creek Clays has had a negative impact. Mary Gross lives about a mile away, and said she's not overly concerned by the shooting, saying, "That's just country life."
She believes the early-morning shooting is not even happening at the range, but instead is just fellow neighbors enjoying their right to bear arms.
She also said she has not seen an increase in traffic, and notes that the facility is beautiful. She thinks the real issue is a resistance to change, and she believes this is just the first of many battles for the area when it comes to growth. "I believe this area is going to grow and change," said Gross. "And nobody wants change."
County Commissioners are set to meet Monday for their formal monthly meeting at 6 p.m. in the County Courthouse. The vote on the rezoning request by Cross Creek Clays is on the agenda.

THOOTHUKUDI: The Tamil Nadu government's efforts to promote the palmyra tree, which is also the State tree, have generated another revenue source for the farmers. The palm seeds, which were hitherto burnt along with dried leaves while cleaning the farm, enjoy unprecedented demand now as activists and volunteers are buying the seeds in large quantities to promote palmyra farming in other areas. The cost of each seed ranges from Rs 0.50 to Rs 2 depending on the region.
A palmyra tree yields at least 30 to 40 bunches every season. Each bunch will have 50 to 100 fruits, which ripe during September to November. Every fruit consists of tree nuts. Traditionally, they are buried under the soil for three months to produce palmyra sprouts, which have a huge demand during the Pongal season. In summer, palmyra fruits are procured to carve out palm jellys and ‘pathaneer’, a refreshing drink extracted from palmyra spathes.
Stating that many farmers who own palm trees do not tap the pathaneer due to a shortage in palm climbers, Boopathi from Nochikulam said he taps only 15 of his 500 palmyra trees.
“Earlier, the seeds were burnt along with the debris to clean the farm. But now, we sell it at a minimum cost of one rupee for each nut,” he added. Activist SJ Kennedy of Mother Social Service Trust said, “The cost of a kernel ranges from Rs 0.50 to Rs 2 depending on the region. I obtained a ripened fruit, consisting of three kernels, for Rs 5 from a village near Tiruchendur, only for seed sowing drives. The imminent valuation can be attributed to palmyra seed plantation drives initiated by NGOs, green volunteers, and government departments.
Anton Brighten, a member of the Tamil Nadu palm tree workers welfare board, said palmyra farmers in the Tiruchendur region do not give the seeds for cheaper prices, as they use them to produce palmyra sprouts, which fetches more profit.
Expressing happiness over the increasing value of the palmyra kernels, Pattuvel of Pannamparai said farmers will not cut the trees anymore. “The trees in the grove had remained untapped after my father grew old. So the rising demand for seeds gives him an income. To add more business value, hygienic techniques to process and preserve fruits for exports should be studied and implemented,” he opined.
A glimmer of hope has returned to what was once a dense palm grove, Siluvaipatti. Farmers in the village said they are procuring palmyra seeds to rejuvenate the palmyra groves. “I bought as many as 1,000 seeds at a cost of one rupee each from Thisayanvilai. Many of the villagers switched to fishing and found jobs at the nearby Thoothukudi industrial hub in the past few decades, which led to the razing of the palmyra trees in Siluvaipatti. Everyone is now aware of the results palm trees can yield,” said Sasi Kumar, a resident.
Pointing out the public interest towards tradition and self-reliant jobs, Retired Deputy Director of Agriculture A Kaza Nazimuddin of Ervadu said a strict order should be floated to stop the slashing of palmyra trees. “The intensification of the awareness about the ecological, nutritional, and economical benefits of palmyra trees have protected them from being cut for the brick kilns” he added.

Nashville, TN – An investigation by Special Agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has resulted in a Montgomery County man facing multiple charges, including aggravated assault, in connection with a 2015 shooting involving Humphreys County deputies.
On November 11th, 2015, at the request of 23rd District Attorney General Ray Crouch, TBI Special Agents began investigating an officer-involved shooting off Highway 13 in Waverly, TN.
Deputies with the Humphreys County Sheriff’s Office were sent to a motorist assist call and encountered Brian Michael Bric fleeing from the scene into the woods.
The investigation revealed that while in the woods, Bric pointed a weapon at the officers and officers fired at Bric. Bric was struck multiple times and hospitalized. No deputies were injured.
On Monday, February 1st, 2016, the Humphreys County Grand Jury returned indictment charging Bric, 37, with four counts of Aggravated Assault, one count of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and one count of Evading Arrest.
On Friday, February 5th, 2016, Bric was transported from Montgomery County, where he was being held on unrelated charges, and booked into the Humphreys County Jail. He is being held on a $100,000 bond.

Pasadena, CA – A colorful new animation shows a simulated flight over the surface of dwarf planet Ceres, based on images from NASA’s Dawn spacecraft.
The movie shows Ceres in enhanced color, which helps to highlight subtle differences in the appearance of surface materials. Scientists believe areas with shades of blue contain younger, fresher material, including flows, pits and cracks.
The animated flight over Ceres emphasizes the most prominent craters, such as Occator, and the tall, conical mountain Ahuna Mons. Features on Ceres are named for earthly agricultural spirits, deities and festivals.
The movie was produced by members of Dawn’s framing camera team at the German Aerospace Center, DLR, using images from Dawn’s high-altitude mapping orbit. During that phase of the mission, which lasted from August to October 2015, the spacecraft circled Ceres at an altitude of about 900 miles (1,450 kilometers).
“The simulated overflight shows the wide range of crater shapes that we have encountered on Ceres. The viewer can observe the sheer walls of the crater Occator, and also Dantu and Yalode, where the craters are a lot flatter,” said Ralf Jaumann, a Dawn mission scientist at DLR.

Dawn is the first mission to visit Ceres, the largest object in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. After orbiting asteroid Vesta for 14 months in 2011 and 2012, Dawn arrived at Ceres in March 2015. The spacecraft is currently in its final and lowest mapping orbit, at about 240 miles (385 kilometers) from the surface.
Dawn’s mission is managed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Dawn is a project of the directorate’s Discovery Program, managed by NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. UCLA is responsible for overall Dawn mission science. Orbital ATK Inc., in Dulles, Virginia, designed and built the spacecraft.
The German Aerospace Center, Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research, Italian Space Agency and Italian National Astrophysical Institute are international partners on the mission team.
